Breakers Under 11Bs Win in Penalty "Shoot-Out"

Written by Bernie Gardiner

In a nail biting finish to the season, the Gerringong Breakers Under 11B soccer team has capped off a terrific year by taking out the District Grand Final.

Going into the Final against Milton Ulladulla as Minor Premiers, Gerringong expected the opposition to play a defensive game, only to find themselves down 1 nil in the early stages. Michael Swain then scored the equaliser for Gerringong after a corner from Josh Norrie.

With the scores still locked at 1 all at full-time, the game was then sent into extra time. With still no result at the end of extra time the game then went to penalty shoot-out, with Brady Spence defending the goal for the Breakers. Goals to Rhyley Foenander, Josh Norrie, Brady Spence and William Bland sealed the win for Gerringong, much to the delight of parents and supporters. There is a report that coach Sean Bland now has a few grey hairs after such a close encounter.

Team member Geordie Wallace was awarded the "John Walker" Shield for the Breakers Soccer Club "Trier of the Year".

Breakers - Finals Update
Under 9B: In perhaps their best game of the season, Gerringong beat Huskisson 3-0 to qualify for the grand final next week.

The backs and midfield combined well to provide lots of support to the attack. Bailey Johnson, player of the match, wouldn't let anyone past. Three times he put kicks through to Edward, who then twice scored with great shots and the third passed off to Chelsea who had ample time to fire it past the keeper. Gemma, Max, Tara and Casey were also strong in defence so our goalkeepers both had quiet games. Lauren, Chelsea and Rachel worked hard in the middle and were able to keep their heads up so they put through lots more passes to the strikers. Edward, Oscar and Chelsea all made strong attacking runs and went close to scoring on a number of occasions.

Great game by all and hope to see more of the same next week.

Breakers' Match Reports 21st August
SEMI FINALS UPDATE

UNDER 9C had a very close and exciting game against Bomaderry with both teams evenly matched. The game went to extra time, also with no result. Then to a penalty shoot out. Unfortunately our guys were unsuccessful and are now out of the competition.

UNDER 9B once again took on Culburra and, as promised, it was a nail biter. Two previous draws meant this one would be close. It also went to extra time and a penalty shoot out. Culburra were successful but as it was the major semi final our guys have another chance next week in the final.

UNDER 11B were successful in their semi final last week. This automatically sees them in the grand final on Sept 1st. No time available at this point.

UNDER 12C were a little bemused on the day and went down to the Basin. A protest has been put to the committee and we are still awaiting the result.

PREMIERS B will play their major semi final on Wednesday 22nd at South Nowra at  7.30pm.

MEN'S 4TH GRADE will play their major semi final on Saturday at South Nowra at 9am.

UNDER 9B will play their final at South Nowra at 10am this Saturday.

LAST WEEK'S MATCH REPORT

Under 9B - It was a very close tussle between Gerringong and Culburra in the major semi final at Sussex Inlet. The ball moved back and forth up each end of the park. but strong defence from both teams meant the goalkeepers were rarely troubled. Max, Bailey and Bronte tackled well at the back while Tara never stopped running in the midfield.  Oscar made a number of strong runs towards goal, while Rachel, Casey and Gemma combined to attack down the wings. With scores level at full-time, play continued with 10 minutes extra time. Both Tara and Lauren almost scored through great individual efforts.  Nevertheless, it was still 0-0 at the end and unfortunately we went down in the penalty shootout. Special thanks to Bronte and Sarah from the Cs for filling in as we were short two players. We will play Huskisson this Saturday in the final at South Nowra at 10am.
