Captain Christie Classic Ocean Surf Swim & Surfboard Paddle
Annual 1.8km ocean swim or surfboard paddle from Gerringong Boat Harbour to Werri Beach, public entries welcome. 10am start (9:15am race brief) on Sunday January 6th 2008, presentations at the Surf Club at 12.30pm.

This will be the 27th running of a wonderful swim. It follows the route of the legendary 19th century sea captain, who bet his crew he could swim from Gerringong Boat Harbour, around to Werri Beach. The prize was a bottle of whisky. He collected, and all swimmers of legal drinking age receive a miniature when they complete this competition.

The 1.8km long course, although not long, is fraught with obstacles for the unprepared. Swimmers have to contend with the invariable north-easterly wind chop, if they swim too far away from the rocks there are strong currents and if they come too close there’s the breaking swell!

Categories: Male/Female ages 12-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+

"The first 150 metres of the Capt. Christie is a bit like swimming through a maritime museum, such is the historical detritus lying at the bottom of Gerringong Boat Harbour (several metres down). Capt. Christie (and his ilk) must have been profligate with disposing of spare ship's parts which had outlived their usefulness."

It's a great day out - a good bunch of people and the centre of a raft of fun activities at Werri Beach, including a fishing competition and auction. Entry forms are available from Gerringong Surf Club. Postal entries close on 3rd January, and entries will also be taken at the club on Saturday, January 5 from 11am to 4pm. Entries will be accepted on race day from 7.30am to 8.45am, but a late fee will apply. For further info contact Bruce Mackie phone: 02 4234 0373.

After the Captain Christie there will be live music, a treasure hunt, fashion parade and the fishing competition weigh-in.
