Young Skateboarder in for Big Year

After a very successful year in 2007, 13 year old Gerroa skateboarder, Ray Macken, is gearing up for another competition year, both in Australia and overseas.

His record last year was exceptional, winning the Australian National Milo X games last May. He also won one of the biggest competitions held in Australia, the Viva Prahran in Melbourne, where he competed in the Open Men's sponsored division.

His year also included travelling with Billabong throughout Australia and to Shanghai, Singapore and Bali competing and doing demonstrations. In Bali he competed in three big international competitions, the Street comp, Bowl comp and Mini-ramp comp. He won all three. In Shanghai he filmed for the Billabong DVD "Bangers in Shangers".

This year will see him going to Bali in March and then return to concentrate on the Sydney Volcom finals to be held in May. The winner of this event will get a trip to America and acceptance in the under 16 World finals to be held in Texas.

Mid-Year will then see him embark on a trip to America and following that, attend the Kuta Carnival to be held in Bali in September.

A student at Kiama High, Ray has only been competing for three years, entering his first competition at the age of ten. His aim now is to become a full-time professional.

Cronin's Win Annual "Pub vs. Club" Clash

With the weather doing a complete turn-around, it was beautiful conditions and plenty of fish, for Cronin's Hotel anyway, in the annual "Pub versus Club" fishing competition.

The Cronins' boats headed south and their decision proved to be the right one, with the day producing good catches of flathead. But it was Cronin's Rob Mace, with his surface fish that took out the individual catch of the day. Rob weighed in 16 fish for a total weight of 17.68kg (cleaned), including two big salmon, the best of which tipped the scales at 3.12kg. Flathead were plentiful, with Peter Matterson "bagging out" for a total weight of 9.46kg closely followed by Roy Brookes with 19 fish weighing in at 9.24kg.

Mick Rowe was the best for the Gerringong Bowlo's with a bag weight of 5.34kg. Joe Biviano took the Bowlo's "Best Fish" with a 1.86kg groper.

At the end of the day it was a resounding win for Cronin's, 772 points to 266.

Hoping to turn their luck around, the Bowlo's headed out on the Sunday for their monthly outing, but as luck would have it, a strong north easterly came up sending them scurrying back to port early. In the end it was Mick Rowe who took out the weekend with a total bag weight of 6.8kg. Dylan Biviano caught the biggest fish on the day, a 1.1kg flathead.
